New Techs Help XCMG QAY800 Crane Succeed in Chemical Industry Construction Sector

June 12, 2012

It is a tremendous challenge to remove a 23-meter-high and 190-ton methanol synthesis reactor tower and replace it with a new one in a 3-day timeframe on a narrow strip barely 13 meters wide.

The newly developed XCMG 800-ton all-terrain crane, XCMG QAY800, is just the "weapon" to deal with such a situation.

Even though XCMG QAY800 had stood the test of continuously hoisting 8 Wind Turbines in 25 days, it was still a first for it to do the same in the above said environment.

In second phase of a chemical plant renovation project undertaken by the Hebei Tuoli Company at the Industrial Park of Hebi city, coal mining capital in northern Henan province, one XCMG QAY800 performed a small miracle on June 1 with help from a XCMG QAY300.

In second phase of a chemical plant renovation project undertaken by the Hebei Tuoli Company at the Industrial Park of Hebi city, coal mining capital in northern Henan province, one XCMG QAY800 performed a small miracle on June 1 with help from a XCMG QAY300.

Self-disassembly for a Limited Space

The site for assembling the crane was a narrow strip 40 meters long and13 meters wide, in which crammed the XCMG QAY800 mainbody with the sweep transportation Vehicle, leaving virtually no space for anything else. On a tight spot like that, XCMG QAY800 was put together without mishap in less than four hours without using any auxiliary equipment, thanks to the application of the most advanced self-disassembly technology.

Multi-Axis/Multi-Mode Steering for Complex Road Conditions

On top of the limited space problem, the ground surface for the hoisting operation was soft grass coupled with criss-cross underground gas pipes and a "maze" of waterways or problematic ramps. Nonetheless, none of the challenges proved to be too much to XCMG QAY800. The superior chassis, multi-axis and multi-mode steering and minimum turning radius technologies that it was developed with took the monstrous machine only 20 minutes to position its three-meter-wide and 20-meter-long body accurately on the operation ground.

Intelligent Control Delivers Precision Manoeuvrability

The most difficult part of the operation was to remove the old tower. The 21-meter-high synthesis tower was located inside a steel framework, weighing190 tons in total with auxiliaries. XCMG QAY800 was requested to lift the old tower 22 meters high and luff it away from its base without touching any of the pipes within a periphery of 1 meter or so. The hoisting started formally at 7 pm and, being equipped with advanced intelligent control, the machine demonstrated super micro-mobility and stability at the hand of the remote control operator. With a 100% loading rate and force-6-plus wind of a looming thunderstorm at the site, XCMG QAY800 stood up to the test by lifting and moving the tower to its rear side. The whole process took only 20 minutes.

Combined Cantilever Expansion Performs Marvels

In addition to mobile lifting, the biggest test to XCMG QAY800 was the continuous static hoisting. Although the machine had been successful in such tests for thousands of times in the factory, it was the first time for it to hoist a RMB16-million-worth synthetic tower in practical action for a prolonged time. Despite the unfavorable conditions, XCMG QAY800 scored a perfect 100 percent in the test with its super-lifting capability, a part of the combined cantilever expansion technology. For more than four hours, the construction team was able to complete the tower base cutting and other treatment processes underneath the synthetic tower hoisted up by XCMG QAY800, during which the entire tower remained steady thanks to the super-lifting capability. The removal operation was eventually accomplished successfully with assistance from XCMG QAY300 at about 1 am the following morning.

The breakthroughs of the four national class new high technologies help seal the irreplaceability of XCMG QAY800 in hoisting operations under complex spacial constraints in large-scale construction projects. XIN Xiaohui, General Manager of Hebei Tuoli Company, who supervised the hoisting operation at the scene with other engineers, commented, "This is the first operation my company has ever performed in hoisting something of such a scale and its success impressed me with XCMG QAY800’s genuine power, in which I have my full confidence! "

After the successful wind power turbine hoisting operation, XCMG QAY800 has made its name in the chemical industry and further reinforced XMCG’s leading position in the heavy-tonnage crane manufacturing industry.
