Sandvik Innovation Prize winners 2020

Johan Sundström and Malin Mårtensson were selected as winners of the Sandvik Innovation Prize 2020 for the development of the world’s first 3D-printed diamond composite. The award ceremony took place at a digital meeting in November.

The Sandvik Innovation Prize is awarded to one or several employees who have developed the most innovative product or process during the year. The prize was introduced in 2003 and consists of prize money and a diploma.

The 3D-printed diamond composite was selected in fierce competition with other Sandvik innovations. At the award ceremony, the winners gave a presentation of the fascinating and complex road to develop the diamond composite. Afterwards they were asked in which applications they see a commercial potential.

“Products that demand extreme high wear resistance, thermal stability and low weight,” answered Johan Sundström and Malin Mårtensson who also said the 3D-printed diamond composite has already gained much attention from customers.

CEO Stefan Widing read the motivation which included the following: “This is a unique product with many possibilities for top line growth, since it solves the long-standing challenge with producing complex shapes of the world's hardest material. This opens up possibilities of using diamond in applications where previously considered impossible. It is a completely new technology, which sits very high on the innovation scale”.
