ASC 100 Machines Handle Coal Stockpiling

Eric’s Roller Hire (Pty) Ltd. has been in business for almost 20 years. The company trades in the hiring and repair of vibratory rollers to the compaction markets of South Africa.

Equipment of 10 tonnes and upward is the specialty of Eric’s Roller Hire, located in Petit, Benoni – Gauteng.

The company has purchased more than 50 Ammann ASC 100 Soil Compactors. “We chose those rollers because of reliability and affordable maintenance,” says owner Eric Laynes. “We supply well-maintained machines with 24/7 backup and support.”

Laynes says some machines work in excess of 600 hours per month.

The Compactors are hired for a variety of traditional purposes, such as general construction. A more unique application is coal stockpiling.

Coal is a self-combustible product after it has been mined. Therefore, stockpiling coal is a very intricate process. It has to be 100% compacted to remove all air pockets in order to minimise the risk of ignition.

Laynes says the Ammann ASC 100 is the perfect machine for the coal stockpiling application.

“Combining the low centre of gravity and the traction optimiser, this machine is truly capable of safely climbing stockpile inclines at 45º and sometimes inclines that are even steeper,” he says.
